FLL/Jr. Underage Team Members

FIRST has age limits on students who participate on FLL and FLL Junior teams. Please use the links below to get all the details. Sometimes we get requests to allow younger or older students on the teams. FIRST will allow the Regional Partner the flexibility to make exceptions. Below are how we will handle this question.

Older Child: For this region we believe that if an older child wants to be on the FLL team it may give an unfair advantage to that team. There are other FIRST programs that child can be part of.

Younger Child: A younger child may want to be with their sibling, or it is more convenient for the parent to keep them on the same team. Our own children were through all these programs. My youngest child was exposed to FRC at 8 years old. By the time he entered high school he was part for the teams for 6 years. He is still part of FIRST in many capacities.

If you have a child that is under the age requirements, we would ask the parent to be with your younger child at all team meetings and events. In this way you are not putting a burden on the coaches of the teams.

The FIRST system may not allow you to electronically register the child with the team. As a result, we will need you to do the following…

  • The child is younger than the age limit for the FIRST program, not older.
  • This will only be allowed if both Coaches of the team agree because there is now possibly a greater burden on them.
  • The Parent will have to fill out the FIRST Consent and Release Form , electronically sign it and save it on their computer.
  • The Parent will then email it to Frank Larkin, the FMA-FLL/Jr. Affiliate Partner ([email protected]).
  • The Partner will update the last page of the PDF and sign it. Then email it back.
  • Upon receipt, the Parent should print out 1 copy. (Hold on to it in case you are going to more than 1 event.)
  • The Parent will hand the printed copy to the Coach who will then hand write the student onto the team roster.
  • The Coach would then attach the paper copy of the consent and release form to the roster to be handed in at their events.
  • Remember: It is expected that one of the child's parents will be the child at all meetings and events.
