Surrogate Calculation for District Rankings

On November 23rd, 2022 FIRST Mid-Atlantic and FIRST Headquarters communicated the following policy to FMA Team Leads via email:

Teams that qualify for the FIRST Mid-Atlantic District Championship (DCMP) but have notified FMA by November 28th, 2022 that they will not be able to attend DCMP due to it’s scheduled dates will be subject to a surrogate DCMP performance calculation leading to the final formula for District Ranking to be:

DE1 + DE2 + (AVG[( DE1 – EI/IMPACT/RAS), (DE2 – EI/IMPACT/RAS)]/2)*3 + Team Age Points

In contrast, a team who attends DCMP’s calculation would be subject to the standard formula, as described in Section 11.8 of the FIRST Robotics Competition Game Manual (2022 for reference):

DE1 + DE2 + (DCMP Performance)*3 + Team Age Points

Teams that qualify to compete for the FIRST Impact, Engineering Inspiration, and Rookie All Star awards will be able to compete remotely for these awards, and points received from these awards at a district event will not be used in the surrogate DCMP performance calculation.

Teams who wished to opt-in to the policy were instructed to respond indicating that their team’s organization had a restriction that would prevent the team from participating in the District Championship. All teams who specified that they were prohibited from participating were opted-in to the policy.

Fifteen FMA teams opted into the surrogate district champsi calculation. Of those, 7 teams qualified to attend DCMP. These teams will be awarded the following points towards district rankings instead of competing at the event. The DCMP surrogate points will be applied to the District rankings as shown on the FIRST website as well.

Additionally 272 won Engineering Inspiration at Bensalem and so will interview remotely.
